Introduction

A heavy duty wood paper coating line applies one or more functional or decorative coating layers to a printed or unprinted decorative base paper, adding properties that the paper substrate alone cannot provide: increased surface hardness, moisture resistance, scratch resistance, anti-fingerprint performance, or a specific surface gloss level. Coating is often the final step before the paper is cut, slit, and delivered to downstream lamination or impregnation processes.

Zhejiang Meige's heavy-duty coating lines are designed for the demanding mechanical requirements of thick, heavy base papers used in HPL, heavy furniture overlay, and industrial surface applications. "Heavy duty" in this context refers both to the substrate weight handled (up to 200 g/m² and above) and to the coating weight applied — direct gravure and reverse gravure coating heads on our lines handle wet coating weights from 2 g/m² (thin primer) to 30+ g/m² (heavy barrier coat) in a single pass.

Available as standalone coating lines or integrated inline with a gravure printing press, our coating platforms serve decorative paper mills, HPL manufacturers, and specialty paper producers who need coating capability independent of or combined with their printing operations.

Application

  • HPL face paper pre-coating — applying a primer or ground coat to heavy alpha-cellulose base paper before gravure printing, improving ink adhesion and reducing ink consumption.
  • Melamine pre-impregnation barrier coat — applying a partial resin pre-coat to base paper before full impregnation, improving resin distribution uniformity on high-porosity papers.
  • Surface hardness and scratch resistance coating — applying UV-curable hard coat formulations over printed décor paper for direct-use furniture surfaces that do not undergo HPL pressing.
  • Anti-fingerprint and easy-clean coating — hydrophobic or oleophobic top coats for kitchen and bathroom furniture surface papers.
  • Moisture barrier coating for humid environments — applying polyurethane or wax-emulsion barrier coats to decorative papers used in bathroom panels and exterior-grade applications.
  • Gloss development by calendering — inline calender stack after coating produces surface gloss levels from 20 GU (matte) to 80+ GU (high gloss) without additional processing steps.

  • Heavy substrate handling capability — purpose-built for papers and boards up to 250 g/m²; tension system, unwind/rewind drives, and coating head pressure are all sized for the high web tensions and coating forces involved with heavy substrates.
  • Multi-coating-method flexibility — gravure, reverse gravure, comma bar, and slot-die coating heads are interchangeable on the same machine frame, allowing the same line to apply thin precision coats (gravure) and heavy functional layers (slot-die) for different products.
  • Inline coat weight measurement — NIR or beta-ray coat weight sensor provides real-time feedback to the coating head gap servo, maintaining coat weight within ±0.5 g/m² without operator intervention.
  • UV cure option for instant surface hardness — UV-curable hard coat stations cure completely within 0.1 seconds, enabling high line speeds without long drying tunnel requirements; finished paper is immediately handleable at rewind.
  • Inline with printing press option — the coating line can be integrated at the output of a gravure printing press, eliminating the intermediate reel and re-threading step and reducing paper handling damage between print and coat.
