Introduction

The Electronic Line Shaft (ELS) wood grain press represents the definitive architecture of the modern gravure printing machine. By replacing the single mechanical drive shaft that once linked all colour units with a network of independent servo motors — each slaved to a master motion controller via high-speed digital fieldbus — ELS transforms register accuracy from a mechanical variable into a software-controlled constant. The result is a press that maintains ±0.1 mm colour-to-colour registration from the moment production speed is reached to the moment the reel is complete, regardless of speed changes, tension variations, or cylinder wear.

For wood grain printing, where the visual credibility of the pattern depends entirely on precise overlay of six to ten sequential colour layers, ELS is not a premium option — it is the baseline requirement. A mechanical shaft press running at 150 m/min accumulates register errors from gearbox backlash, shaft torsion, and bearing play that are directly visible in the finished print as colour fringing and grain blur. ELS eliminates all three error sources simultaneously.

Zhejiang Meige has standardised on ELS drive architecture across its full press range, from 4-colour entry presses to 10-colour wide-web industrial lines. Our ELS platform uses Siemens SINAMICS S120 or Mitsubishi MR-J4 servo drives with 32-bit encoder feedback, delivering correction bandwidth of 1,000 Hz per axis — fast enough to suppress even high-frequency register disturbances caused by cylinder eccentricity or web tension impulses.
