Introduction

A melamine impregnated paper printing line is a gravure press configured to produce the decorative base paper that feeds directly into a melamine resin impregnation bath. The impregnated paper — commonly called melamine paper or overlay paper — is then hot-pressed onto particleboard, MDF, or plywood to create the finished surface seen on millions of pieces of furniture and flooring sold globally every year.

The printing and impregnation steps are closely interdependent: ink penetration depth, paper porosity, and residual moisture content after printing all affect how evenly the melamine resin is absorbed. Zhejiang Meige designs our melamine paper printing lines with this downstream process in mind — the drying system is calibrated to leave the paper in optimal condition for resin pick-up, not just visually dry on the surface.

Our lines are available as standalone print presses that feed existing impregnation equipment, or as complete print-plus-impregnation packages where the printing line and melamine bath are integrated into a single continuous production floor layout.

Residual moisture control — inline moisture sensor after the last drying zone measures paper moisture in real time; the dryer temperature profile is automatically trimmed to maintain the target 4–7% residual moisture required for optimal melamine resin uptake, preventing both over-dried (brittle) and under-dried (slow impregnation) conditions.
Impregnation-compatible ink formulation guidance — our technical team advises on ink formulations that do not form a surface film that blocks resin penetration; a common issue when packaging-grade inks are used on impregnation base papers.
Inline or offline integration flexibility — the press output section can be configured for direct inline feed into a customer's impregnation bath, eliminating the intermediate winding step and reducing paper handling damage on sensitive base grades.
Gentle web handling — alpha-cellulose impregnation base papers have lower wet strength than coated papers; our tension system uses the lowest achievable tension consistent with register accuracy to minimise web breaks and edge damage.
Consistent porosity preservation — drying system design avoids surface sealing of the base paper, preserving the open pore structure necessary for deep, even resin penetration in the impregnation bath.

Payment Terms: 30% T/T deposit; 70% T/T before B/L. L/C at sight accepted for orders ≥ USD 150,000.

Packaging: VCI anti-corrosion film + fumigation-free export wooden cases. Moisture-sensitive electrical components double-packed.
Shipping: FOB Ningbo / Shanghai. CIF and DAP available. For combined print+impregnation lines, we coordinate multi-shipment scheduling.
Commissioning: FAT at factory. 2 engineers on-site 14–21 days; commissioning includes trial print run with customer's base paper and ink, and if inline integration is ordered, coordination with the impregnation line team.
Warranty: 12 months from commissioning or 18 months from shipment date.

Q: What residual moisture content should melamine base paper have after printing and before impregnation?
A: The optimal range is 4–7% residual moisture by weight. Below 4%, the paper becomes brittle and prone to cracking at the impregnation bath entry roller. Above 7%, resin uptake is uneven because the water in the paper competes with resin absorption. Our moisture sensor and dryer feedback system maintains the paper within this window automatically.

Q: Can the printing line feed directly into our existing impregnation bath?
A: Yes, provided the impregnation bath has a compatible infeed section and web speed range. We design the press output section with a festoon accumulator that buffers speed differences between the press and the impregnation line, allowing both to run at their optimal speeds independently. This requires a site visit or detailed layout drawing exchange during engineering.

Q: Do standard gravure inks work on impregnation base paper, or is a special formulation needed?
A: Standard packaging gravure inks are formulated to create a dense surface film, which can partially block the pore structure of impregnation base papers and impede resin uptake. Melamine paper applications require open-structure gravure inks specifically designed to penetrate into the paper fiber rather than form a surface coating. We maintain a list of qualified ink suppliers offering compatible formulations.

Q: What base paper grammage is most common for furniture melamine overlays?
A: For furniture board overlay (particleboard and MDF), 70–90 g/m² is the most common range. Flooring LPL overlay paper tends to run heavier at 80–100 g/m². Backing paper and balance papers used in the same pressing stack are typically 90–120 g/m² but are usually unprinted. Our press handles the full range on a single machine with recipe-based tension adjustment.
