The top layer of an engineered floor panel — whether laminate, SPC, WPC, or engineered hardwood — is the only part the consumer sees and feels for the lifetime of the product. Engineered flooring top layer printing is the process of producing this critical visual element: a gravure-printed decorative paper or film that carries the wood grain, stone, or tile pattern that defines the floor's aesthetic and drives its retail value.

Q: What is the difference in print requirements between residential AC3 and commercial AC5 laminate flooring?
A: The print itself is identical for AC3 and AC5 panels — the difference in abrasion class comes from the overlay paper (aluminium oxide content and grammage) applied on top of the décor layer, not from the décor print. However, AC5 commercial flooring typically requires more demanding colour consistency specifications because large commercial installations are purchased in multiple batches that must match in an installed floor. This drives tighter Delta-E tolerances and more rigorous lot approval procedures for AC5 décor paper production.

Q: How do we qualify our printed décor paper for HPL flooring pressing conditions?
A: The qualification process involves pressing a representative sample at the target temperature, pressure, and cycle time, then measuring the Delta-E colour shift between the unimpregnated print and the finished panel. If shift exceeds 2.0 Delta-E, cylinder depths and ink formulations are adjusted to pre-compensate. We recommend conducting pressing qualification trials at the customer's facility during commissioning, with our engineer present to record parameters for the press calibration record.

Q: Can the press produce herringbone and chevron plank layouts for luxury vinyl formats?
A: Yes. Herringbone and chevron patterns are designed into the cylinder engraving; the press prints them identically to standard straight-grain patterns. The cylinder design must account for the cutting layout of the finished panels so that the pattern direction appears correct after the individual tile or plank shapes are die-cut from the printed roll.

Q: What annual production volume justifies investing in a flooring décor paper press?
A: Based on current market pricing, in-house printing typically becomes economically justified at annual consumption above 10–15 million m² of décor paper. Below this volume, purchasing from a specialist décor paper mill is generally more cost-effective. Above 20 million m² annually, the ROI on a dedicated press is typically 3–5 years, and the additional benefits of pattern exclusivity and supply chain control further strengthen the business case.
