Q: What screen ruling is the practical maximum for decorative paper gravure?
A: 175 lpi is the practical upper limit for most decorative base papers. Above 175 lpi, the cell size becomes smaller than the surface fibres of typical alpha-cellulose base papers, causing inconsistent ink release and erratic highlight dot reproduction. For very smooth, calendered base papers, 180–200 lpi is achievable but requires extremely precise doctor blade control and is rarely justified for wood grain patterns. The majority of premium HD wood grain work is done at 150–165 lpi, which gives excellent detail without the process sensitivity of the extreme fine-ruling range.

Q: How does doctor blade angle affect print quality at high screen rulings?
A: At 150+ lpi, cells are small enough that even a 1–2° change in doctor blade angle significantly alters the wipe pressure on the cell walls. Too shallow an angle leaves excess ink on the cylinder land areas, causing tonal value increase and grain blur. Too steep an angle over-wipes shallow highlight cells, losing detail in the pale grain zones. Q: Does high-definition gravure require a slower press speed?
A: Not necessarily. At 150–165 lpi on good-quality base paper with optimised ink viscosity, production speeds of 120–150 m/min are entirely achievable with no quality penalty. The limiting factor is usually drying capacity rather than print unit performance: at high speed with 8–10 colours, the drying tunnel must fully cure each ink layer before the next colour unit, and under-drying causes smearing on the following impression cylinder. Q: Can the same press produce both HD premium patterns and standard commodity wood grain?
A: Yes. The HD capabilities of the press — electronic doctor blade, inline spectrophotometry, viscosity control — are available on every job but only need to be actively managed for HD production. For standard commodity jobs, operators can run with manual blade settings and periodic manual viscosity checks, just as they would on a standard press.
