Introduction

When a decorative paper mill needs to push output without sacrificing print quality, a high speed gravure press purpose-built for decor substrates is the answer. Zhejiang Meige's high-speed gravure line is designed to run at sustained web speeds of 150–250 m/min while maintaining the tight color-to-color register and ink density consistency that the furniture and flooring industries demand.

Unlike packaging gravure presses adapted for paper printing, our decor-specific design addresses the unique challenges of porous, dimensionally sensitive base papers: low-tension unwind systems, wider ink viscosity windows, and drying tunnels calibrated for water-based gravure inks that penetrate rather than sit on the surface.

The press is available in 4 to 10 color stations and web widths from 1,280 mm to 2,200 mm. It is especially popular among manufacturers supplying laminated flooring, HPL, and furniture board markets where large-volume repeat orders justify the speed premium.

Q: How does flying splice work and what paper waste does it generate?
A: Flying splice accelerates the new reel to match web speed, then applies a double-sided tape splice in under one second without slowing the press. Waste at each splice is typically 2–4 m, compared to 20–80 m for a manual stop-and-splice. Over a full production shift this can save several hundred meters of base paper.

Q: Is the press suitable for water-based inks only, or can it use solvent inks?
A: The standard configuration is water-based, which suits the majority of decor paper buyers targeting European and Asian markets with VOC restrictions. A solvent-based variant with explosion-proof motors and solvent recovery is available for markets where solvent inks remain standard. Specify at the time of inquiry.

Q: What is the realistic daily output of an 8-color, 1,600 mm press?
A: Running at 180 m/min average (accounting for splice and color-change stops) over a 20-hour production day, output is approximately 216,000 linear meters or roughly 345,600 m² of 1,600 mm wide paper. Exact figures depend on job length, ink type, and operator efficiency.

Q: Can existing engraved cylinders from another press be used?
A: Yes, provided the cylinder shaft diameter and bearer diameter match our print unit specifications. We supply a cylinder dimension checklist during the quotation stage. Re-chroming or re-grinding of your existing cylinders to our tolerances can be arranged through our partner engraving workshops.

Q: What utilities does the press require on-site?
A: Compressed air at 0.6–0.8 MPa (approx. 2,000 L/min for an 8-color press), natural gas or steam for drying tunnels, three-phase 380 V / 50 Hz power (connected load approx. 350–550 kW depending on model), and a temperature-controlled ink mixing room is recommended.
