Q: Is water-based gravure ink print quality equal to solvent-based on decorative paper?
A: For wood grain and standard decorative patterns on porous base papers, modern water-based gravure inks produce print quality indistinguishable from solvent inks when the press drying system is correctly designed. The main technical advantage of solvent inks — faster drying at lower temperatures — is less relevant on porous base papers that absorb ink rapidly. On non-porous substrates like PVC film, solvent inks retain a slight adhesion advantage that requires corona treatment pre-treatment to compensate for with water-based inks.

Q: Can the press be converted from water-based to solvent-based in the future?
A: Conversion is technically possible but requires significant modifications: explosion-proof motor and electrical enclosure upgrades, addition of solvent recovery or abatement equipment, and replacement of stainless-steel ink pan seals with solvent-resistant materials. The capital cost of conversion typically exceeds 30% of the original press value. We strongly advise choosing the correct ink system at the time of order rather than planning for future conversion.

Q: What drying capacity is needed for water-based inks at 150 m/min?
A: Water requires approximately 2,260 kJ/kg to evaporate, compared to about 350–500 kJ/kg for common gravure solvents. At 150 m/min on a 1,600 mm press with 8 colours at typical ink laydown, drying demand is approximately 180–240 kW of thermal power. Our dryer sizing is calculated precisely for each customer's ink laydown and speed specification to ensure no drying deficit at maximum speed.

Q: How do you control ink viscosity automatically in a water-based system?
A: Water evaporates from the ink in the open pan during production, gradually increasing viscosity. Our automatic viscosity system measures efflux time in each ink pan using a DIN4 flow cup sensor every 60–90 seconds, and adds small measured doses of water when viscosity rises above the setpoint. The system maintains viscosity within ±2 seconds DIN4 throughout the run without any operator action.
