Introduction

A wide web decorative paper printing press is a rotogravure line built around a web width of 1,850 mm or greater — typically 2,100 mm, 2,200 mm, or 2,500 mm — to maximize the square-meter output per press run and to serve the large-format panel board sizes increasingly used in contemporary furniture and interior design.

Wide web printing offers two compounding economic advantages: more usable paper per linear meter of press run (fewer slitting operations, less edge trim waste), and the ability to print patterns that span the full width of a 2,100 mm or 2,440 mm panel without a visible vertical seam. For large-slab stone patterns, wide-plank flooring boards, and panoramic architectural panels, wide-web printing is not just economical — it is the only practical way to produce the pattern at full scale.

Seamless large-format patterns — patterns wider than 1,600 mm cannot be printed on standard presses without a visible vertical join. Wide-web printing eliminates this constraint for slab stone, panoramic wood, and abstract large-format designs.
Dual cross-web drying zones — wide drying tunnels are independently temperature-controlled across two lateral zones (operator side / drive side) to prevent the moisture differential across the web width that causes cross-web curl in wide-format papers after rewinding.

Q: What factory building height is required for a 2,200 mm wide-web press?
A: The press structure itself reaches approximately 5.2 m at the highest point (top of the drying tunnel on an 8-color model). We recommend a clear building height of at least 6.5 m to allow for overhead crane access during installation and maintenance cylinder changes. A 10-ton overhead crane with sufficient span for the press width is also recommended.

Q: How much heavier are the printing cylinders on a 2,200 mm press versus a 1,600 mm press?
A: A standard gravure cylinder for a 1,600 mm press weighs approximately 180–220 kg. The equivalent cylinder for a 2,200 mm press weighs 280–350 kg. This means cylinder handling requires a workshop crane or cylinder trolley rated for at least 400 kg; manual handling is not safe or practical. We include cylinder handling recommendations in our factory layout guidance.

Q: Is print quality the same across the full 2,200 mm web width?
A: Our reinforced cylinder bearing design and precision-milled frame maintain doctor blade contact uniformity across the full web width within ±3% ink density variation, which is within the visual perception threshold for wood grain patterns. The dual cross-web drying zones prevent edge-center color shift caused by moisture differential in wide-format drying.

Q: Can a 2,200 mm press also run narrower webs for smaller orders?
A: Yes. The press can run slit or narrower rolls using the full-width cylinders with lateral web guiding centering the narrower web. However, production efficiency is reduced as drying tunnel capacity is not fully utilized. Many customers run wide-web for large commodity orders and switch to a narrower press for pattern-change-intensive shorter runs. We can advise on the optimal multi-press strategy for your product mix.

Q: What is the foundation load-bearing requirement for a 2,200 mm, 8-color press?
A: Total machine weight for an 8-color, 2,200 mm press is approximately 85–110 tonnes distributed over the machine footprint. We recommend a reinforced concrete foundation with a minimum load-bearing capacity of 8 t/m² and a flatness tolerance of ±2 mm over 5 m. Foundation drawings with point-load locations are provided 60 days before machine shipment.
