Introduction

Drying is the rate-limiting step in water-based gravure printing for decorative paper. While a gravure cylinder can theoretically transfer ink to paper at any speed, the press can only run as fast as the drying system can fully evaporate the water carrier from the ink before the next impression cylinder contacts the printed surface. Under-dried ink smears on the next impression roller, causing visible defects and potentially cross-contaminating the next colour station.

High speed drying for decorative inks is therefore not a luxury feature — it is the engineering challenge that determines the maximum production speed of a water-based gravure press. The latent heat of water evaporation (2,260 kJ/kg) is approximately five times higher than that of common gravure solvents; producing a water-based press that runs at 200 m/min requires a drying system engineered with the same rigour applied to the print units themselves.
