Introduction

An impregnation base paper printing machine is a gravure press engineered around the specific properties and downstream requirements of alpha-cellulose base papers manufactured for resin impregnation. These papers — sometimes called décor raw papers or impregnation raw papers — are produced to tight specifications: controlled porosity for even resin uptake, defined basis weight for consistent resin loading, and specific moisture content ranges that affect both printability and impregnation performance.

The printing step sits between paper manufacture and resin impregnation in the production chain, and what happens on the printing press affects both. Ink penetration depth determines how much of the paper's pore volume remains available for resin. Residual moisture after drying affects resin viscosity at the impregnation bath entry. Surface ink film formation — acceptable on packaging papers — is actually a defect on impregnation base papers because it reduces resin absorption and causes bond failures in the laminate press.
