Introduction

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is the substrate of choice for routed furniture components, profiled door fronts, and smooth-surface cabinet carcasses worldwide. Unlike particleboard, MDF's uniform density and smooth face allow decorative paper to be laminated to complex profiles as well as flat panels — which means the printed overlay paper must perform consistently across both the flat press and the post-forming operations that wrap paper around edges and routed details.

MDF surface decorative paper machinery encompasses the gravure printing lines used to produce these overlay papers: roll-to-roll presses configured for the porosity, basis weight, and dimensional stability requirements of MDF-grade alpha-cellulose base papers, printed with the wood grain, solid colour, and fantasy patterns used by furniture manufacturers globally.

Q: What makes post-forming base paper different from standard furniture overlay paper?
A: Post-forming base papers are manufactured with controlled elongation properties — typically 3–6% cross-direction stretch before breaking — that allow the paper to wrap around curved or profiled MDF edges without splitting. Standard furniture overlay papers are stiffer and optimised for flat-press bonding. The printing process must not damage this elongation property; excessive web tension during printing can permanently stretch and embrittle post-forming papers, which is why our low-tension handling configuration is critical for this substrate type.

Q: Can the press print high-gloss effect papers for MDF lacquered-look furniture?
A: Yes. High-gloss effect is achieved by printing on a pre-calendered gloss base paper and applying a clear varnish overprint in the final colour station. The gravure varnish station lays down a uniform clear coat that, after calendering downstream, produces a high-gloss finish competitive with UV-lacquered MDF at significantly lower production cost.

Q: Is special ink required for MDF papers destined for humid-environment applications?
A: For kitchen and bathroom MDF applications, we recommend gravure inks with moisture-resistant resin systems and, where direct exposure is possible, the use of moisture-barrier overlay films rather than paper. Standard water-based gravure inks on paper are not inherently waterproof; moisture resistance is primarily provided by the melamine resin or overlay film layer applied downstream, not by the ink itself.

Q: What is the typical paper waste percentage at job changeover on an MDF paper press?
A: With our recipe management and auto register acquisition system, waste at job changeover is typically 30–60 m of paper from thread-up to first saleable print. This compares to 150–300 m on presses without recipe memory that require manual re-setup. Over a production year with frequent pattern changes, this difference in changeover waste can amount to several tonnes of base paper saved.
