PVC film presents three core technical challenges that paper does not: low surface energy requires corona pre-treatment for ink adhesion; thermal sensitivity requires controlled drying temperatures below 100 °C to prevent film deformation; and dimensional instability under tension requires precise low-tension web control to prevent permanent film stretching that would distort the printed pattern. Advantages

Inline corona for guaranteed ink adhesion — the corona treater immediately before the first print unit activates the PVC surface immediately before ink contact, preventing the surface energy decay that occurs when corona-treated film sits in a warehouse roll before printing; fresh corona treatment produces consistently superior ink adhesion compared to pre-treated film.
Chill roll section prevents hot-wind blocking — PVC film exits the drying tunnel above its softening temperature and must be cooled before rewinding to prevent interlayer blocking; our chill roll section brings the film below 40 °C before the rewind, enabling tight reel winding without blocking even on thin 0.05 mm film.
Temperature-limited drying zones — each drying zone has an independent hard temperature limit that cannot be overridden by the operator, preventing inadvertent film damage if process parameters are changed during production. This hardware interlock is especially important for thin-gauge PVC that deforms within seconds of exceeding its deformation temperature.
EIR output for SPC flooring — optional encoder output enables print-to-emboss synchronization for SPC flooring producers adding EIR capability to their production line.
RoHS-compatible ink process — our recommended ink systems for PVC film printing use RoHS-compliant pigments and binders, supporting furniture and flooring manufacturers supplying to markets with restricted substance requirements.

Q: What is the maximum printing speed achievable on thin 0.07 mm PVC film?
A: At 0.07 mm gauge PVC, practical production speed is typically 60–80 m/min with water-based inks, limited by the drying energy that can be applied within the PVC temperature limit of 95–100 °C. Solvent-based inks dry at lower temperatures and can run faster — 80–100 m/min — but introduce solvent handling requirements. The tension system on thin-gauge film also becomes more sensitive at higher speeds; our press is sized to handle the combination of low web tension and high-speed operation that thin PVC requires.

Q: Why is corona treatment done inline rather than using pre-treated film purchased from the film supplier?
A: Corona treatment effect decays over time as the activated surface energy reduces through atmospheric oxidation. Pre-treated film from a supplier may have been treated weeks or months before printing; by the time it reaches the press, surface energy may have fallen from 42 dynes/cm at treatment to 34–36 dynes/cm — below the reliable adhesion threshold for water-based inks. Inline treatment ensures surface energy is at its peak at the exact moment of ink contact, guaranteeing adhesion regardless of film storage duration.

Q: Can the press print PVC foam (foamed PVC) as well as solid PVC film?
A: Yes, with appropriate modifications to the impression roller nip pressure and the web tension range. PVC foam compresses under nip pressure, which affects ink transfer and register; our adjustable impression system can be set for foam substrates. PVC foam also has lower tensile strength than solid film, requiring the minimum-tension end of our film tension range. These settings are stored as a foam-specific recipe.

Q: Does the press require explosion-proof equipment for solvent-based PVC inks?
A: Yes. If the customer selects solvent-based PVC inks, the press must be equipped with explosion-proof motors, ATEX-rated electrical enclosures, and LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) monitoring in the drying tunnels. This is specified and priced at the time of order. Converting a water-based press to solvent operation later requires a full electrical safety retrofit that is expensive and time-consuming; we recommend deciding ink system type before placing the order.
